Bungalow Retrofit, Claygate, Surrey
We were approached by the property owner, who was looking to increase the size of this existing single storey suburban bungalow and also improve the appearance and energy efficiency of the dwelling.
We came up with a solution that retains much of the existing structure – the existing foundations and most of the internal and external walls are retained.
The existing roof will be removed and replaced with a cut and pitch truss rafter to allow for a second storey. The design proposal allows for three new strong gable forms to the front elevation, with frameless glazing and contemporary detailing. The remainder of the elevation is clad either in render or timber cladding, with the roof clad in slate.
External insulated render to all elevations, insulation within the roof and new high performance windows and doors bring this 1960’s bungalow up to current building control standards. As well as a dramatic improvement in visual appearance and energy efficiency, this retrofitting design solution has saved the client money over and above a complete demolition and new build.
